Dr. J's Vibrant Cafe, which made its official Downtown LA debut yesterday after a soft opening. It's the f restaurant to open in the Medallion Apartments, a new building at 4th and Main that will have several new dining options (Bigmistas BBQ from Neil Strawder, Sushi Zo and Cafe Uzes from Traxx at Union Station's Tara Thomas, to name a few) and a farmers market. But Dr. J's is also adding vegan and gluten-free food to the DTLA scene, which is in much higher demand than we knew.
The menu comes courtesy holistic health practitioner and chef, Dr. Juliet Tran, who wants to rid our diets of toxins and "harmful" ingredients like sugar, wheat, yeast and dairy. So you'll find things like ginger and mustard greens soup; chunky tofu salads; kale and quinoa in abundance; and super-food baked goods. There's a separate juice and smoothie bar and a small market for garb-and-go, but the lovely patio and spacious light-filled space is worthy of a sit-down meal. Dr. J's opens daily from 11 AM to 9 PM, and there's validated parking in the lot adjacent to the building.
