One of the strangest things we've ever put in our mouths is balut, the partially formed duck embryos that are a staple food in the Philippines. (Even Chris Cosentino, a.k.a. "Offal Chris," won't go near the stuff.) If you're the gonzo type, consider signing up for the Maharlika and Jeepney folks' second annual balut-eating contest on August 3. Or just go and watch: Festivities happen from noon-10 PM, with the contest at 6 PM, at Hester and Essex Streets. For wimps like us, there's also a lechon roast and some other non-embryonic Filipino eats. Interested contestants should email firstname.lastname@example.org; if you want to know what you might be in for, here's video from last year.
