Celebrate Belgium With Mussels and Beer

Mussel Throwdown Celebrates Belgian Heritage
July is a month of patriotic celebrations, happily involving great food and drink. Last week, we honored American independence with hot dogs and fireworks, and this weekend sees Bastille Day, which calls for activities dishing up French fare and wine. Next up is Belgium, whose National Day is July 21. Beginning July 15, local Belgian eateries - Belga Café, B Too, Brasserie Beck, Et Voila, Granville Moore’s, Le Pain Quotidien Locolat Café and Mussel Bar & Grille - will be celebrating their heritage with a week of special deals and events. Half-priced mussels and beer, happy hours and prix-fixe menus will be in the mix, along with a “Hop-tail Day” on July 19, when cocktails will be made with Belgian beer. Check out the schedule here.

A mussel throw down and a blindfolded beer challenge on Saturday July 20 at Eastern Market will cap the week-long celebrations. Chefs will be compete to come up with the best recipes, and will challenge their taste buds in the beer tasting. The public is invited and can chow down on mussel pots and beer (11 AM-3 PM; $5 admission includes a pot of mussels or a beer).
