Best Thing We Ate: Duck Confit Cheese Fries at Sixth Street Tavern

Ever since National French Fry Day last weekend, we couldn't get fries out of our heads, and the only way to squash a craving is to give in, so we caved at Sixth Street Tavern. The fries at the newish Downtown watering hole are good plain - thick-cut, fried just right, golden, not soggy - but we went for the ultimate "best cheese fries" on the menu 1) because they're the 'best' and 2) because duck confit was the meat option. The fries held up their end of the bargain, never buckling under the weight of smoked gouda, some sort of garlicky cheese sauce, cheese shavings and chunks of shredded duck confit. The duck was great and a nice complement to the cheeses. A good crisp pilsner was just the right match, although the fries disappeared faster than our beers did. Go big or go home, right?
