Ask the Austin Zagat Blog: Where Can I Find Poutine?

Eating out in our fair city raises all sorts of burning questions. Is it okay to take a date to a food trailer? Yay or nay on cargo shorts at Uchiko? Then there are the more general questions we’ve always wondered but been too afraid to ask. Are you allowed to eat garnish? Who pays for that extra appetizer?

That’s where the Austin Zagat blog comes in. Ask us anything your heart desires in the comments section below, and we'll give you our honest opinion.

This week a reader asked us, I just moved from Canada, and I’m dying for poutine. Is there anywhere in Austin that serves it?

A few years ago, you would have been out of luck. But now that Austin is a more cosmopolitan town, several places offer the traditional French fries covered in gravy with cheese curds. Check out Frank, which has a huge following for its hot dogs, poutine and live music, as well as Banger’s Sausage House and Beer Garden.

Or head to the food trailer park on Jessie Street, where you’ll find Potato.A, an entire truck devoted to the Canadian staple. Choose from traditional, Italian (French fries with fresh bruschetta, cheese curds and house-made bacon bits), Glasser (French fries, beef and bean chili, and cheese curds) and Southern (French fries with barbecue pulled pork, queso and jalapeños). We are in Texas, after all.
