The 2013 Philadelphia Vendy Award Winners

The winners celebrate, surrounded by family
Veteran food truck King of Falafel took the top prize at the third annual Philadelphia Vendy Awards, which took place Saturday at Pennypack Park on the Delaware River. Nabil and Hined Akkeh have been serving Middle Eastern food to Philadelphians at 16th and JFK for 24 years, and the falafel they served was good enough to win over the judging panel and earn the coveted Vendy Cup.

The award for best dessert went to Lil’ Pop Shop for the second year in a row. The Cow and The Curd came up big - the brand new truck won the people’s choice pick, and also scored the new Tide Stain Eraser “Messy Yet Tasty” award. Rob Mitchell’s battered and fried cheddar curds even received the blessing of Emilio Mignucci, the third-generation co-owner of cheese mecca Di Bruno Bros. who was one of the judges. “I would have eaten the whole tray of curds if they hadn’t warned me we still had a dozen plates of food to try,” he confessed.
