Sweet Shutters: Bonte and Betty’s Speakeasy Closing

Bonte Wafflerie has closed its last outpost, at 922 Walnut Street, and it looks like the mini-chain is done for good. The Rittenhouse location of the cafe went out of business last fall while guests were still sitting at tables, never a good sign. However, that 17th Street spot is now Luke’s Lobster, so we can hold out hope for an awesome new tenant to take over the empty Jefferson area spot. (We could use more waffles in Philly, any Belgian entrepreneurs out there?) [The Insider]

Cupcake lovers will feel the sting when Betty’s Speakeasy in Grays Ferry wraps up on July 31 - the cafe served sweets, coffee and brunch at its retail location but also provided cupcakes to many other coffee shops around the city. A flier posted on the door and on social media says the closing is a “personal decision” of the owners so they can focus on family. The poster also promises a return in the future, though not in the same location. [Foobooz]
