Potito’s Bakery Brings South Philly Treats to Center City

One of South Philly’s favorite treats is now available in Center City, and it doesn’t trade in any deliciousness for its convenience. Twenty-five-year Rittner Street fixture Potito’s Bakery opened at the corner of Juniper and Walnut early this spring, and offers an array of cookies, cakes chocolates and of course, cannoli.

Proprietor Matt Benigno tells us he saw a great fit for the bakery there, since the space was previously Naked Chocolate and then briefly a chocolate shop by nearby Philly Cupcake, so he jumped on the chance to open a second location. It’s worth stopping in just for a duo of the signature cannoli, for which flaky, house-fried pastry shells are stuffed with ricotta cream filling studded with chocolate chips. Cannoli also come filled with vanilla or chocolate cream.

If you’re having a party, you could go for the “Colossal Cannoli” - a giant shell filled with mini cannoli that Benigno is rather proud of having invented. Or get a tray of Italian cookies, which come in dozens of shapes and sizes, including special designs for each holiday. On the evening we visited, a traditional Italian accordion player was playing, guests were sipping coffee and nibbling on sweets, and the friendly South Philly vibe was going strong.
