Lunch Alert: Top Round Roast Beef, ShopHouse Start Serving Today

Here's a lunch tease for you: the new roast beef mecca Top Round is up and running, as of yesterday. Now serving regional roast beef sandwiches like Beef on Weck, a staple from Buffalo, New York, with meat and hot horseradish sauce on a caraway bun; the beef and cheese with homemade "wizz" sauce, a la the Philly cheesesteak; one with barbecue sauce and fried onion and jalapeno straws; and another with black pepper, blue cheese and caramelized onion. The sandwiches are all made with a slow-roasted beef and go for less than $7 a pop. There's also fries, and frozen custard served in a cone, in floats or as "concrete," basically a super thick shake. For something a bit more global, the first of several ShopHouses, Chipotle's Thai food spin-off, opens today at Sunset + Vine in a former Baja Fresh acros from the Arclight. Just like its Mexican food sibling, here you queue up, pick a noodle, rice or salad, your protein (chicken satay, steak laab, pork and chicken meatballs, or organic tofu), vegetables and sauces (red or green curry, tamarind vinaigrette) and other toppings like crushed peanuts or crispy garlic. And voila! Your bowl is ready. As for authenticity, apparently they haven't dumbed down the spiciness. The bowls go for about $8, bringing another decent inexpensive option to that Hollywood intersection. ShopHouse is open daily from 11 AM to 10 PM (6333 Sunset Blvd.; 323-462-2856).
