Check out the new Last Thursday's small plates menu at Santa Monica's longstanding JiRaffe tonight. Raphael Lunetta has concocted a slew of new dishes like seared yellowtail with spiced black radish kimchi, blistered ginger Sungold tomatoes and yuzo kosho; crispy togarashi crusted soft-shell crab with grilled baby fennel and charred summer corn; pancetta-wrapped shrimp and bay scallop risotto; and duck with grilled peaches, Swiss chard and Tinto Fino gastrique. $36 per person for four items; each item is $9 thereafter. If you haven't yet made your way to the Greenbar Distillery, LA's first since Prohibition, this Friday is your chance. Take a tour of the property, where Melkon Khosrovian and Litty Mathew make Tru organic vodka and gin, Ixa organic tequila, Crusoe rum, Fruitlab liqueurs, Bar Keep Bitters, Slow Hand whiskey and others. You'll get to taste those and more - including the new herbal Garden Vodka and an amaro based on the state flower, the California poppy - at the second-floor cocktail bar, where a resident mixologist will show you how to make some lively libations. Cool Off With This
The only way to stay cool this weekend: boozy milkshakes and beer. On Sunday, BLD will have various milkshakes in both spiked and non-spiked form. Look for flavors like strawberry cream cheese with Licor 43, bourbon pecan with Root liqueur, and cinnamon marshmallow with Cointreau. Get individual shakes for $9, or a flight for $12. Starts at 5 PM. The same day in the South Bay, it's Waves of Grain at the Shade Hotel where more than 40 different breweries will be pouring beer, and there will be BBQ and a whole roasted pig for sustenance. Tickets are $40 in advance, $50 at the door. 3-6 PM.
