Get Ready for National Hot Dog Month

On July 1, Mayor Michael Nutter will issue an official proclamation declaring July National Hot Dog Month, adding Philadelphia to the nationwide monthlong celebration of the all-American snack. Like last year, frankfurter fan and history buff Joel Spivak has organized hot-dog-centric events throughout the month, starting with a kick-off party on June 28.

At 6 PM this Friday at the corner of Fourth and South, Spivak will host Tracy Kaufman Wood to share memories of growing up at her father’s restaurant, Abie’s Hot Dog Shop, which presided over that corner in the 1950s. Join them for light refreshments and live music, and to check out the “Hot Dog History in Philadelphia” photography show.

Later in July, look for a tour of famous area hot dog vendors, a hot dog crawl down South Street, a frankfurter eating tour of Reading Terminal Market and a couple of charitable events, all in the name of the mighty wiener.

  1. Hello,

We here at the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council love what you’re doing with your site, and we’re sure you’re just as excited about National Hot Dog Month as we are. We wanted to let you know about an upcoming contest we’re hosting called Hot Dog Idol.

The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council is celebrating National Hot Dog Month by calling on hot dog fans across America to sing a hot dog song. Songs can be original or you can change the lyrics to your favorite song, but the goal is the same: sing to profess your love of hot dogs in a video or audio post.

The grand prize winner will receive a $250 gift certificate to the grocery store of their choosing to build the perfect summer picnic. First runner-up will receive a $100 gift certificate to the grocery store of their choosing, and second runner-up will receive a $50 gift card to the grocery store of their choosing. All top three vote-getters will receive complimentary Council T-shirts.

Full contest information is available here (http://hot-dog.org/ht/d/sp/i/91643/pid/91643).

Would you be willing to promote this contest on your blog? If there’s anything we can assist you with in return, just let us know. We’d love to connect with you on Facebook as well (https://www.facebook.com/NHDSC).
