barbecue week, we’re highlighting a different barbecue restaurant outside of Austin each day. Zagat readers rounded up their five favorites here, but with so many awesome joints in the area, we have a few more in mind too.To celebrate
The next restaurant to make the cut (fatty and lean) is Black’s. The joint is part of the holy trinity in Lockhart, and it’s the only one that isn’t caught up in the family drama between Kreuz Market and Smitty’s Market.
On a recent visit we drooled for days over hearty beef ribs with burnt ends as well as (surprise) the turkey, which held its own against the red meat and snappy sausage. The fresh rolls and cornbread help soak up all that sauce, a condiment you won’t find anywhere else in Lockhart. Also be sure to check out the jackalope mounted on the wall as well as the rest of the kitschy interior.
If you can handle it, try Kreuz and Smitty’s all in one day, like we did a few months ago. Just be prepared for a meat coma that might last for, oh, a year or two.
