Before Chichen Itza was anointed one of the "New 7 Wonders of the World" in 2007, most foreign visitors knew little of the Yucatan beyond the beaches of Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Chichen Itza's ascendance and the 2012 end-of-the-world furor earned the peninsula a bright blip on the tourist radar, more than 170 years after John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Cather Wood's Incidents of Travel in Yucatan enticed the first travelers with tales of a "lost" civilization.
