Pono Burger Kicks Off Burger Month With Santa Monica Debut

If you're more into celebrating Burger Month, which happens to be May, than May Day itself, check out the new Pono Burger in Santa Monica today. In Hawaiian style, it's in a funky free-standing shack - the Quonset Hut is a historic prefab metal relic from WWII - on Broadway. Windy 'Makani' Gerardi, known for locally sourced Ultimate Burger in Kona, brings the same philosophy to the mainland, this time sourcing beef from a Mount Shasta ranch, cheese from SaMo's Andrew's Cheese Shop and organic potatoes and toppings from nearby farmers. Some of Gerardi's creations include the Sweet Mona, a beef patty topped with balsamic-strawberry compote, bacon, cheddar, caramelized onions and lettuce. The fries are hand-cut, the milkshakes are made with Straus Family Creamery ice cream and the lemonade is squeezed per order. Pono opens at 11 AM today.
