Party Report: The School Lunch Inspired Bites at Chefs' Playground

Last night’s inaugural Chefs' Playground event not only brought an impressive lineup of chefs cooking for a cause, but cute kids were there as well. No wonder the event raised over $1 million dollars for the southwest side charter school, The Academy for Global Citizenship. You try saying no to a six-year-old passing out lemonade at the entrance or Terzo Piano. Most of the money was donated in a challenge grant to encourage the development of the state’s first net-positive energy campus. In addition to the lemonade stand, the event featured cocktails from the Aviary and an assorment of small bites inspired by cafeteria staples.

But let’s face it; we were there for the food. Guest chefs included Rick Bayless, Paul Kahan, Giuseppe Tentori and Jose Garces. Out favorite dish of the night came from Food Network’s “Sandwich King” Jeff Mauro who served his famous Patty Wheel with griddled ground shortrib and sirloin on marble rye with caramelized onions and shishito peppers as well as white American cheese and his signature 18,000 Island Dressing with a side of crispy jalapeƱos. We chased it with Hedy Goldsmith’s, of Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink, take on a double-stuffed Oreo.

Check out photos from the event (cute kids included).
