Now Open: Federal Bar Long Beach, Seasalt Fish Grill, Blu Jam Cafe

Blu Jam Cafe's amazing French toast, now in Sherman Oaks
Just in time for the weekend, here are a few snippets of openings from around the Southland. First up: After a preview a few weeks ago, The Federal Bar officially opened in Long Beach on Monday, offering pub eats like the Federal Dog, an all-beef hot dog topped with shallot rings, pickled jalapenos and mustard, and fried chicken with sage-infused red velvet waffles with spicy syrup. There are also plenty of cocktails and craft brews, just like its NoHo sibling. The Knitting Factory Entertainment group, which also owns Bow & Truss in North Hollywood, said they hope to take over more former bank buildings and replicate the gastropub around the country (102 Pine Ave.; 562-435-2000).

Bringing more seafood to the masses, Seasalt Fish Grill, a new fast-casual concept boasting "the ocean's alternative to fast food," debuted in Santa Monica this week. The menu features everything from Ensenada-style fish tacos to fish and chips, cornmeal calamari and Southwestern eggrolls (?). Check out the full menu here (508 Santa Monica Blvd.; 213-944-6631). Blu Jam Cafe, which has served some of LA's favorite crunchy-coated French toast on Melrose since 2006, opens a second location in Sherman Oaks this weekend. The look is slightly different (it's in the former Cafe 50s on Ventura), but the menu remains the same. Doors open on Saturday, May 18, at 8 AM. If you want to get a two-for-one brekkie deal, go here (15045 Ventura Blvd.; 818-906-1955).
