Mexican Restaurant Week, May 1-5

Tuna ceviche with strawberry vinaigrette at El Rey
The Mexican Consulate and the Mexican Cultural Center of Philadelphia have organized Mexican Restaurant Week, and it’s going on right now. From Wednesday-Sunday, May 1-5, four of the region’s best Mexican restaurants are offering special prix fixe dinners. Check out the offerings below, then call for reservations.

Tequilas
At the upscale Rittenhouse Mexican you’ll get three courses for $35, and you get to choose anything on the regular menu. For an appetizer you could get the queso fundido, for example, with or without chorizo. As your main the choices are nearly limitless - carne asada, molcajete de pollo, seafood enchiladas and a lot more - and then you also get to finish with dessert (215-546-0181).

Las Bugambilias
The colorfully tiled South Street spot is running a serious deal: four courses for just $25 per person. Start with a chicken flautas and follow it up with soup, either chicken or a cream soup that’s half-poblano, half-mushroom (one of the best bowls in the city, we must add). Entree choices include an 8-oz. steak with pepper sauce and grouper veracruzanos, and then flan or a fresh chocolate crepe for dessert (215-922-3190).

El Rey
Stephen Starr’s diner-vibe Mexican in Rittenhouse is doing a $20, three-course deal - choose app, entree and dessert from a special menu (215-523-9999).

Xilantro
Out in Wayne, this airy restaurant just opened up its large patio, so you can enjoy the breeze with your four-course $40 prix fixe. You’ll get soup, salad, a choice of main (including a fish dish and a filet mignon) and a dessert (484-580-8415).
