Katz's Is Turning 125 and Throwing Some Parties

Katz's famous pastrami
Long before hip boutiques and Beard-winning chefs colonized the Lower East Side, there was Katz's Delicatessen - 125 years ago, to be exact. The venerable brisket hall is turning a century-and-a-quarter this year, and it's planning a few shindigs to celebrate.

On Friday, May 31, there'll be a Shabbat dinner benefitting the Henry House Settlement. Expect "an interpretation of Katz’s staples" by Danny Bowien, Joey Campanaro, and other chefs, which sounds awesome. Call 212-766-9200 x257 or e-mail info@henrystreet.org for tickets.

On Sunday, June 2, there's an all-day party at the restaurant itself. And down Orchard Street there'll be a block party featuring [drumroll] a pastrami-eating contest! Sounds exciting, folks, and if you've ever seen the line at Katz's on an ordinary Sunday, you'll know to arrive early for these events.
