Chicago Botanic Garden Celebrates the Season With Chef Demos

As tempting as the Slagel Family Farm dinners may be, not everyone wants to make a two-hour journey to the middle-of-nowhere, Illinois. For food in an equally exciting setting, visit the Chicago Botanic Garden during its Garden Chef Series. Between May 25 and October 6, the garden brings in 40 different chefs to prepare a signature dish with ingredients from the Regenstein Fruit and Vegetable Garden. The cooking demonstrations take place on Saturdays and Sundays between 1:30 and 2:30 PM and seating is first-come, first-served.

Participating Chicago chefs include Luca Corazzaina (312 Chicago) on May 25, Cleetus Friedman (The Fountainhead) on June 22, Frederico Comacchio (Coco Pazzo) on July 20, Chris Macchia (The Florentine) on August 3, Ivan Yuen (Shanghai Terrace) on August 31, Kristine Subido (Pecking Order) on September 14, Dennis Stover (Mindy’s Hot Chocolate) on September 15, David Di Gregorio (Osteria Via Stato) on September 28 and Heather Terhune (Sable Kitchen & Bar) on October 5.

Chef Cleetus Friedman also returns on Wednesday July 17, August 14 and September 11 for a multi-course farm dinner under the grape arbor in the garden. Tickets cost $200 and include cocktails, appetizers and garden tour. In addition to the cooking demos and dinners, the Botanic Gardens host a farmers market featuring local produce, meat, baked goods and art on select Sundays starting this weekend. The full lineup of events is available online.
