Best Thing We Drank: The Last Word at LAAC's Invention Bar

As far as private clubs go, we're pretty much on par with Groucho Marx: "I don't care to belong to any club that will have me as a member." That doesn't mean we don't like to slip in to a space from time to time to see how the other half lives. At least we know we like to drink the way they do. Invention is the new third-floor bar at the historic Los Angeles Athletic Club - it was the first private club in Downtown LA - and like the club itself, the new bar and lounge area has had a modern re-do, complete with a cocktail overhaul by Aidan Demarest and Marcos Tello of Liquid Assets.

There was a little to-do last night to show off the new digs, which included as many classic cocktails as you could handle, including a really fantastic Last Word. What we like most about this drink is that it's gin, our fave, mixed with green chartreuse, maraschino liqueur and lime. It's a little sweet and a little tart, sharp, herbal. Just super-quaffable. Apparently it was first served at the Detroit Athletic Club in those Prohibition days. How fitting.

The cocktail program focuses on the kind of drinks men would've been drinking when the LAAC opened, which are fitting for the cool confines of Invention, with its mix of contemporary and modern furniture, dark woods and vintage sports paraphernalia. Turns out you don't have to be a full member of LAAC to join: There's a new "social membership" ($250 to sign, $80 a month), so you can go drink, socialize and plot the next great takeover.
