Best Thing We Ate Today: Huaraches in Highland Park

It being Mexican Food Week here at Zagat means we're forced to eat Mexican food every day. Ok, no it doesn't. But it does give us even more reason to explore some of the fine regional Mexican cooking we're fortunate to have around the greater Los Angeles area. Enter El Huarache Azteca, a teensy little cash-only spot on York Boulevard in Highland Park, which just happens to have some of the best huaraches in town. The oblong disc of fried bean-filled masa is the size of a man's shoe and comes topped with any choice of meats, from pastor to cabeza, a few shards of lettuce, crema and cheese. We opted for chorizo plus both salsas, which just makes the whole thing softer. It's big, hearty, cheap and simply delicious. The place was pretty steady for lunch today, but it gets really packed on the weekends.
