Best Thing We Ate This Weekend: Beiler’s Donuts

We didn’t really plan to eat donuts at Belier’s this weekend. What was supposed to be a reconnaissance mission - a brief stop to check out the new Reading Terminal Market stand between photographing charcuterie boards - turned into an unwise (with regard to waistline) sweets fest.

Next to counter clerks clad in Pennsylvania Dutch attire, the Beiler brothers oversaw crisping rounds of dough in a huge vat of bubbling oil, then stuffed them full - two at a time - of numerous cream and jam fillings. A dip by hand into the icing, a sprinkle of coconut or nuts or sugar and into the rapidly depleting glass display case.

Though there’s a dizzying selection of nearly 40 flavors, our favorite was the classic glazed, so light and airy and sweet and crunchy it disappeared before we could help it.
