There's more to Mexican food than just tacos and burritos. Last night, at Toloache in Midtown, we decided to break away from our tortilla-wrapped favorites and try one of chef/owner Julian Medina's signature entrees, the Camarones Toloache. This dish features four huge roasted garlic shrimp on a crispy tortilla, with pureed black beans, chayote squash spaghetti salad, chihuahua cheese and a rich, flavorful cascabel salsa. It was a tasty alternative that felt lighter than the usual Mex classics (which was good, because after binging on homemade chips and fresh guacamole, we needed something that wouldn't put us into a Mexicoma). The dish costs $28 and is available at all three Toloache locations.
