Austin Weekend Planner: Derby Dress Hats and Cinco de Mayo Sombreros

Derby Day julep at Drink.Well.
This weekend promises plenty of floppy hats for both Derby Day and the fifth of May. But also check out the other happenings, from beer classes to Beastie Boys blowouts.

Hops & Grain Class at Whole Foods
Taste locally brewed beers from Hops & Grain Brewing along with a light summer menu, with courses like chilled spring pea soup and broiled seasonal fish with smoked lemon relish, walnut ash and herb salad. ($50, 525 N. Lamar Blvd., 6:30 – 8:30 PM)

Trailer Truck-Off Challenge at the Scoot Inn
Head to the Scoot Inn to watch three chefs compete for a chance to run their own food truck behind the Scoot Inn. The competition is hosted by ATX Brands (the group behind Chicago House and the Parish Underground), and the competitors are still a secret. However, the winner will be given the prize of a six-month contract to operate the Zorro food trailer. Live music from the Bluebird Specials promises to make the afternoon special too. (1308 E. Fourth St.; 2 – 5 PM)

Derby Day Party at the Bonneville
Check out the drink specials like the fresh blackberry mint julep and hot brown sandwiches at the open-air bar this Saturday, and be sure to come dressed for the occasion. As the Bonneville says, “Bigger is better when it comes to hats.” (202 W. Cesar Chavez, 3 – 7 PM)

Derby Day Party at Drink.Well.
It’s not all about the race at this hip spot on North Loop. Sure, there will be mint juleps, food and “festive headwear,” but after the derby stay tuned for $2 Brooklyn Lagers and $4 Brass Monkey drinks in honor of the Beastie Boys’ MCA. Also check out the Beastie Boys concert footage shown all night. (207 E. 53rd St., Noon – 11 PM)

Cinco de Mayo Around the City
Check out our guide to Cinco de Mayo!

SOMM Film Screening
So you want to be a master sommelier? First watch “the documentary film chronicling one of the hardest tests in the world – the master sommelier exam,” presented by Becker Vineyards and the Hill Country Film Festival. Also chow down on hot dogs from Frank. ($40, 464 Becker Farms Road, Stonewall, starts 12:30 PM)

  1. It is that time of the year again where people use their best hats trying to impress others. A wonderful event that is so much fun since it is filled with great colors and designs. :)
