9 Boston Food Artisans You Should Know

Supermarkets are full of mass-produced products - many of which are, in turn, full of stuff we don't need to be eating. (Have you looked at the unpronounceable names on the ingredient lists lately?) But Boston small-batch food artisans are thriving, and creating delicious, all-natural products out of home and community kitchens. Not only are these elegant edibles (and small-batch beverages) focusing on quality over quantity, but they put responsible sourcing methods over profit margins. Hungry yet? Here's some of the best.

  1. Many might suggest the omission of Taza to be an unfortunate oversight. With direct trade and sustainability missions, and a unique and high quality product, I'm supremely proud of Somerville-based Taza Chocolates and I've yet to try a stone-ground chocolate to match.

  4. Another terrific, local, artisanal selection of spreads is offered by Deborah's Kitchen (deborahskitchen.com) and available in various stores. We've enjoyed Deborah's spreadable fruit and relish for several years. Deborah developed her products in a local "culinary business incubator" as described in the article - perhaps even the same one. (Disclosure: I know Deborah as a former work colleague, but I have no interest in her company)

  8. It's hard to find but worth seeking out: Golden Girl Granola made in Shirley, MA. I've found it in some Whole Foods stores as well as Hannaford's in a few places. It's the first granola I've tried that doesn't taste like sawdust! It's delicious on yogurt or even right out of the bag. Only in the Boston area as far as I know.
