5 Cinco de Mayo Celebrations in Austin

On Sunday, Mexican Food Week will end with a giant bang, with Cinco de Mayo celebrations bursting from our overstuffed enchilada of a city. Here are five of the best bets.

La Condesa Cinco de Mayo Block Party
It’s the golden birthday of this block party: The fifth annual Cinco de Mayo party promises La Condesa’s Mexican street food like chicken and pork tacos and the famous grilled corn covered in cheese and chile powder, as well as margaritas, beer and aguas frescas. Bands like Le Guerilla will liven up the party even more. (Free entry, food and drink individually priced, 400 W. Second St., 1–9 PM)

Crawfish Boil at Third Base, Southpark Meadows
You’d think tacos would reign on Cinco de Mayo, but crawfish and live music from Gustavo Rodriguez might just hit the spot too. Also get your fill of $4 large Dos Equis and Dos Equis Amber all day. (9600 S I-35, 2–5 PM)

Live Oak Barbecue's 2nd Anniversary Party
In honor of Cinco de Mayo and the barbecue restaurant’s second anniversary, Live Oak will be smoking barbacoa-style lamb in their custom roasting boxes and serving it up for your pleasure in $2 tacos. Also down Austin Beerworks’ Pearl Snap draft as you listen to live music. (2713 E. Second St., starts 2 PM)

Cinco de Mayo at Fiesta Gardens
Check out the Conjunto and Tejano bands at the park on both Saturday and Sunday, and chow down on gorditas, fajitas, chicharrones and more. The best? “Various tacos made with flour or corn tortillas and then topped with salsas of varying heat temperatures and other condiments will make your mouth water and have you craving for more.” Pets not allowed. (Saturday, May 4: Free until 5 PM, $7 after 5 PM, 11 AM–10 PM; Sunday, May 5: $7 all day, Noon–9 PM)

Travis County’s Cinco de Mayo Fiesta
Drink aguas frescas and nibble antojitos while you listen to live music on the first floor of the Travis County Expo Center. Take note that this event is on Friday, not Sunday. (May 3, 700 Lavaca St., Free, 11 AM–2 PM)
