Video: Modern Sprout Brings Hydroponic Gardening Home

Lately, it seems like everyone has jumped on the Kickstarter bandwagon to fund projects ranging from food trucks to independent films. Enter this Chicago couple, who are pioneering a concept they call “counter agriculture” by compacting cumbersome hydroponic gardening technology into window boxes. If successful, their project, Modern Sprout, will begin mass-producing compact planters that require little effort to grow herbs, flowers and other greens.

In addition to Modern Sprout, several other campaigns are aiming to improve local produce offerings in Chicago. The Garfield Park Community Council is raising money to run a weekly farmer's market called The Garfield Park Fresh Food Market. Growing Homes needs $20,000 to purchase a new hoophouse for an urban farm. Global Gardens is seeking funds to purchase new seed-saving gardens and beehives. Follow the progress of these and other local small-business ventures on the Seed Chicago Kickstarter page.
