Vegas Cabs Overcharged by $15 Million in 2012

Las Vegas cab drivers taking visitors to and from the airport chose longer routes, resulting in $14.8 million in extra charges in 2012, according to an audit released this week, USA TODAY reports. An average ride from the airport to downtown shoudl cost between $22 and $27, and one to the southern end of the Strip should run $12 to $17. However, of the 2,730 airport trips that auditors reviewed, 22.5% included roundabout routes meant to run up the meter. The Nevada Taxicab Authority is required to develop a plan of action to respond to the audit by mid-July and to file a progress report on changes by January 17.
