The Little Toast Shop That Could: Sqirl's Summer Expansion Plans

Who knew that toast would be such a thing? Jessica Koslow, jam maker extraordinaire and Sqirl's owner, never planned on running a full-fledged cafe. At least that's how she puts it in a note about expansion plans for her little Los Feliz spot, which will get more indoor seating, plus more food and drinks and a "surprise" something (booze? bakery? we guess beer and/or wine). She writes on her website that the cafe "began as a collaborative, pop-up toast and coffee 'experiment'... in all of its temporary, slapped-together, ad hoc glory." Obviously she was on to something, because the critics weighed in and fans flocked for egg-and-veggie toast, handmade pastas and even lobster rolls.

In addition to the expansion, the coffee program, led by Alex Guzman from Single Origin, will replace G&B, which is moving on to open on Larchmont and at Downtown's Grand Central Market next month. Koslow says she'll have to close for a week or two in June or July "to make the changes." Until then, jam and cheese toast for all.
