The End Of an Era: Ohio House To Close

Maybe you never dined at the coffee shop located in the Ohio House Motel, but chances are anyone who has spent time in River North has walked pasty the retro diner. Not some hipsters recreation, it is a small restaurant with fifty years of history and regulars. According to Crain’s, Ohio House Coffee Shop will close at the end of the month to be replaced with a chain coffee shop. Owner Cathy Roquemore began working at Ohio House as a server 30-years-ago. In 2004, she purchased the restaurant. “They're trying to close places like this down (because) these places cut into their profits,” Roquemore said in response to her landlord giving her 30 days to evacuate the space. Ohio House was known for its $7 breakfast specials, iconic sign and the feeling that nothing, not even the staff, has changed over the past few decades.
