Shake Shack May Shake Up Harvard Square

Shake Shack recently opened in Chestnut Hill.
The word is out. Shake Shack may be headed to Harvard Square. Eater notices that the New York-based quick-serve burger chain, which just opened its first New England location in Chestnut Hill, is holding a public hearing on May 9 to hopefully open at 57 JFK St.

Denise Jillson, executive director of the Harvard Square Business Association, confirmed that Shake Shack operators have been trying to secure a location in the square "for a while."

"They're quality operators," Jillson told Zagat. "I think they'll bring a lot of excitement and joy to our 8 to 10 million visitors," she added, referring to the number of annual visitors to Harvard Square.

Boston's blog quotes Shake Shack’s senior PR manager Greg Waters as saying, “Regarding Harvard Square, we are indeed interested in a potential location for a new Shake Shack. At this point we have submitted an application to the city for a special permit, and we will not be in a position to make a formal announcement until the board has reviewed and approved our application.”

Though the building houses other retailers and restaurants, the location for the new Shake Shack is in the space formerly occupied by Om, whose address was 92 Winthrop Street at JFK Street. Stay tuned for more updates.
