Photos: 5,700 Pounds of Bacon Devoured at Baconfest 2013

The Chicago Skyline, the bacon edition
Baconfest – the word alone strikes fear and terror in the eyes of vegetarians around Chicago. One of the largest food festivals of the year welcomed 128 chefs to the UIC Forum on Saturday. Those chefs fed 5,700 pounds of bacon to 3,000 guests over lunch and dinner sessions - that is almost 2-pounds of bacon per person. The goal is to prove once and for all that Chicago is the most gluttonous, bacon-lovin’ city in the world. Just kidding, it’s for charity. The event raised $50,000 for the Grater Chicago Food Depository.

We stopped by the dinner session to sip bacon cocktails, eat bacon doughnuts, try bacon sushi and find out who would be honored with the coveted “Golden Rasher” for most creative use of bacon. During the lunch session Benny’s Chop House won the award for best front of hours presentation. During dinner, Fresco 21 took the same award by making a replica of the Chicago skyline out of bacon. The first Golden Rasher went to Lockwood and the second was awarded to last year’s winner, Three Aces.

Check out our photos from this weekend’s event. Warning: extreme uses of bacon.
