Get Your Cheesy Fix for National Grilled Cheese Day Today

Mmm... Heywood cheesy
Whether it's grilled, panini-pressed, toasted or flattened with an iron on an ironing board, melted cheese between two slices of bread is the greatest invention since, well, sliced bread. Today we honor the classic comfort food in all forms - simply with cheese, many kind of cheeses or stuffed with fruits, meats, jams and vegetables - for National Grilled Cheese Day. In addition to these eight cheesy creations or these, here are a few others to savor today.

Heywood A Gourmet Grilled Cheese Shoppe
You can't go wrong with just about anything on the menu, something like the Game Changer (English double-gloucester with homemade habanero jam on sourdough) or the Italian Bleu Jeans (fresh mozzarella, creamy blue cheese, walnut pesto and sun-dried tomatoes). Or create your own Heywood from all the choices of cheese and bread whenever the craving strikes - the Silver Lake spot is open till 3 AM on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights (3337 W. Sunset Blvd.; 323-667-1522).

TLT Food
You can get the surf-and-turf at the Westwood cafe - half blue crab grilled cheese, half short rib grilled cheese, served together on one plate for $8 (1116 Westwood Blvd.; 310-443-4433).

Olive & Thyme
Stop by this Toluca Lake spot for a triple cheese (blue, fontina, white cheddar) with heirloom tomato. Might as well have some dessert while you're at it (4013 Riverside Dr.; 818-557-1560).

Rock & Reilly's
If you happen to be drinking at this West Hollywood spot, today only from 4-10 PM get five different grilled cheeses stuffed with things like bacon and guacamole, green tomato, mac and cheese, jalapeno poppers and of course corned beef, all $10 (8911 W. Sunset Blvd.; 310-360-1400).
