Fast Food Burrito Smackdown: Chipotle vs. Qdoba

A burrito isn’t really Mexican. (As Don Memo owner Leo Saavedra told us, “If you ordered a burrito in Mexico, you’d be more likely to get a small donkey instead of food.”) However, burritos definitely are real deal Cal-Mex cuisine. From their native California, burritos have spread across the nation, in large part due to chains like Chipotle and Qdoba, which produce at least close-to-authentic renditions. But which one is better?

To find out, we took burritos from each outlet over to La Calaca Feliz (which does not serve burritos; the authenticity thing), and had the chefs and line crew do a blind taste test for us. Which chain came out on top? Click through to find out.

  2. Written by someone that clearly knows a great burrito when they taste one...about time Qdoba gets the respect over Crapotle!

  3. No, it was written by someone who didn't fact-check--at least when profiling the tasters.

    1. Meaning what? I was there on site with the tasters, so "profiling" came straight from their mouths.

    2. Line cook? Or Sous-Chef?

    3. According to my last text with Lucio Palazzo (before this article was posted), Matt Savastano is the sous chef. Not sure what Grub was told.

  4. They both are great, but I choose Qdoba over Chipotle and I work for Chipotle. Sorry gang, they really take good care of their team.

  5. They both taste pretty much the same. Chipotle has better hot sauces to go along with your burrito. However Qdoba has warmer (temp) burritos. Chipotle's are usually room temp or cold by the time you get to your table. Chipotle is around fifty cents to a dollar cheaper. But because QDoba is warmer than Chipolte, QDoba wins! I'd pay the little extra for food that's at least warmer than the other place's.

  6. Chipotle has better rice and they don't charge you like $1.60 when you want fejita veggies in your Vegetarian burrito. Qdoba sucks.

  7. Qdoba uses a cheese sauce Chipotle uses real cheese. Chipotle is way better I have tried both many times.

  8. Definitely, this is not Mexican food. It is an adaptation of Mexican ingredients for the US consumer, in both cases.
