|DTF: coming soon/Eater|
Talk about a game-changer for Americana at Brand, Rick Caruso's fairly popular shopping center and apartment complex known more for movies and boutiques than decent restaurants. Sure, SBE's Katsuya is there, as is a Frida and Le Pain Quotidien. But Din Tai Fung, San Gabriel Valley's most notably busy dumpling house? 'Tis true, according to Caruso, who unveiled plans at a media breakfast this morning (sorry we couldn't make it, Rick!). And as much as we admire Michael Mina and love his food, having DTF that much closer is even more exciting than Mina's Bourbon Steak making its debut in LA. Both restaurants will open in two previously unoccupied spaces on the corner of Brand and Colorado, Din Tai Fung in September and Bourbon Steak early next year.
This isn't the first LA venture for Mina. Remember SBE's XIV? The initial "everyone order the same tasting menu" concept really didn't work out. This, his fifth Bourbon Steak to open in the country, is more fitting. Caruso said that Din Tai Fung, "one of the greatest Chinese rstaurants in the world," will serve the regular menu, including noodle dishes, pot stickers, fried rice, soups and truffle dumplings. We really hope the tofu and seaweed salad too, because we could live off that and nothing else. But the xiao long bao, the tiny soup dumplings the restaurant is known for, will be served only on weekends. Which might actually make the weekend lines at the SGV originals that much shorter. We shall see.
