Closings: Bar 1886 Temporarily, Black Cat Bakery and Smoke Permanently

Bye bye, Black Cat
If you were planning a secret rendezvous at Bar 1886, you'll have to wait until April 22. The Raymond and its hideaway bar (with one of the better cocktail programs in town) has shuttered for a three-week kitchen overhaul. With the upgrade, chef Tim Guiltinan intends to expand the menu in both the restaurant and bar. The Raymond plans to participate in Pasadena Restaurant Week, and look for new spring cocktail and food menus when it reopens later this month.

Over near the Miracle Mile, Eater spots signage that the two-year-old Black Cat Bakery & Cafe has officially closed its doors. Too bad, because the cute shop had tasty baked goods (the frosting-filled chocolate Black Cat muffin for one), breakfasts and coffee. The cafe took over the former Mani's Bakery space, which lasted for nearly 20 years. Hopefully the next tenant has as much longevity.

And in West Hollywood, according to WeHoville the fairly new Smoke restaurant is no longer. Having only been open since August (with an "official" launch in November), the restaurant never quite found its footing. But it's just one of those spaces, tucked at the end of Melrose, that has been a constantly revolving door of short-lived concepts over the years. The other two restaurants from the Broseph Restaurant Group (yes, they named it that), Fatty's Public House on La Cienega and Brick + Mortar in Santa Monica, remain open.
