Austin Makes #1 on List of Overrated Travel Destinations

Why travel to Austin when you can enjoy the beautiful city of Houston? That’s what David Landsel writes over at the Huffington Post this morning. Austin tops HuffPo’s list of 10 terribly overrated travel destinations. Landsel says Austin is a “midly entertaining university town and state capital with fever dreams of greatness, a city whose entire purpose for breathing is to not be like everything else around it.” We can't help but think that this choice of cities is HuffPo's attempt to not be like everyone else around it, since Austin has been receiving a lot of national love lately.

He continues by citing the wonderful museums and restaurants like Uchi that have popped up in Houston. We don’t want to hate on a fellow Texas city, but we’d pick Austin’s original Uchi over Houston’s any day.

Landsel continues,
“Sprawling Austin is one of those unfortunate places that seems really smashing on paper. And then one ruins things by going. You have now been advised.”
Whoah! Where'd all that hate come from? Thoughts?

  1. This list has zero credibility. How can you say that San Francisco (#2) is not an amazing travel destination?

    Haters gonna hate.

  2. why on earth would anyone ever want to visit Houston or Dallas except to visit NASA, or the place where that President was shot

    1. NASA... meh, it's ok. Spending a day or two in the Museum District a few miles out of downtown Houston would be a lot more interesting and fun.

Has the person who wrote this actually been to Houston? The "beautiful" city of Houston? Really?!

  4. The writer of the original article didn't say go to Houston for its beauty, but for, quote, "an impressively creative and very fun town, with good museums (the Menil Collection, the Contemporary Arts Museum), plenty of good food..."

Yes... much to the chagrin of self-absorbed Austin, Houston really does have an impressive assortment of culture and arts. Several great festivals as well, and fabulous, varied eats.

However, I have no clue why he brings up Uchi. Houston had an awesome food scene going long before Austin started getting good.
