We're not exactly sure who makes up these national food holidays, but in the case of April - deemed National Grilled Cheese Month - we're rolling with it. Given our obsession with artisanal breads, fine cheeses and seasonal veggies, it's no surprise that San Francisco harbors some incredibly delectable options.   1. Pictured sandwiches share 2 disastrous flaws: (1) bread's too thick & too dry; (2) lightly brushing folding grill pans with butter or oil does NOT do the job. Proper grilled cheese sandwich: sharp Vt white cheddar on oatmeal bread, placed in heavy skillet flooded with foaming melted butter; done when fully melted inside, golden brown & totally buttery outside.
