Zany Zebra Art Inspires an African Food Menu at Liberté

Don’t worry, there’s no endangered equid meat in the food, but a new art installation in the lounge at Sofitel’s Liberté has inspired chef Jim Coleman to create a limited-time menu full of French tweaks on African flavors. A series of exuberant pieces by French zebra artist Norma Bessieres is on display in the Rittenhouse hotel, and the “Taming of the Stripes” dishes are just as exotic.

Cameroon beef curry with pineapple and coconut is a good example, as is the Kenya M’Baazi - coconut beans in lettuce envelopes. From Uganda there’s veal with bananas and ginger, and Nigeria is the inspiration for white bean pancakes with smoked shrimp. The special dishes are available during lunch and dinner, March 15-31 (215-569-8300).
