Where to Eat South Indian Food in Austin

One of the fiercest debates in Austin food concerns the best Indian restaurant. Is it the Clay Pit? Swad? Bombay Bistro? But let’s take a step back. There’s Northern Indian cuisine, known for its tandoori ovens, roasted meats and spicy curries, and then there’s Southern Indian food, which is more rice-oriented and focuses on vegetarian options like lentils as well as the massive paper-like crepes called dosas. Since Austin has the largest Asian population of all major Texas cities (the majority Indian and Vietnamese), it follows that we have our fair share of great food too. Here are a few South Indian options in our city.
