The Best Thing We Drank Last Night: French Colonial Cocktails at L'Amant

We've heard some quiet buzz in cocktail circles about L'Amant, a West Village lounge that uses the French Colonial era as its inspiration. The joint has been open six months and hasn't become a must-try stop on the city's libation circuit, but we suspect that will change once beverage enthusiasts find out about it (read: go now). The beverages use subtle twists of creativity to amp up the experience. We enjoyed the sherry that was in the bourbon-based China Man, and the only thing cooler than the house-made bergamont juice in the drink dubbed the Black Snake was the plastic reptile frozen into the ice ball.

Old-time jazz plays on the radio and the small but heavily styled rooms are perfect for a romantic rendezvous. Oh, and this joint has what's easily the best cocktail happy hour since Elettaria closed a couple years ago and took it's Violet Hour with it. Drinks are two for one until eight every day - an unbelievable deal considering the quality coming from behind the bar.
