Starbucks Taste Test: New Hazelnut Macchiato

Coffee Week is unfortunately behind us, but there is just one more coffee drink that we've yet to discuss - the brand new Starbucks Hazelnut Macchiato which launched this week nationwide. So what exactly IS a macchiato, technically speaking? For those not in the know it's an espresso drink with a very small amount of foamed milk dotted on top (macchiato means "marked" as in marked with a small amount of milk.) Starbucks' long popular Caramel Macchiato has been on the menu for decades and its taken that long for them to add another flavored variation to the mix.

We recall the former to be excruciatingly sweet, as its topped with caramel sauce, but we were pleasantly surprised to find the new hazelnut drink not too sweet at all. In fact, it wasn't much of anything - not too heavy on the hazelnut or sugar and not carrying that trademark "over roasted" flavor that Starbucks drinks usually hit you with. It basically just tasted like a latte with a hint of hazelnut and certainly more foamed milk than is probably appropriate to still call the beverage a macchiato. The drink is available both hot and iced at locations around the U.S.

  1. Really.....this is just a hazelnut latte, and they probably pour to much foam so that the drink will hold a swirl of caramel on top. This isn't a new drink. A barista has been customizing this drink for years. The problem is that starbucks doesn't let their baristas stray from their recipes and the normal barista makes whatever the customer wants. I've made these for years.

  2. It looks like they also launched a specific hazelnut drizzle for this drink so not quite the hazelnut latte.

  3. Just order a Hazelnut Misto to save a few bucks. (though, i guess the lack of a shot of espresso will be missed?)

  4. I was a barista at Starbucks for 3 years and this is one of my favorite drinks. Replace the caramel drizzle with chocolate drizzle and you've got a Bachio Macchiato. Plus if you get the drink made with half & half and a barista who knows what they're doing, you'll get a nice thick almost sweet foam with the chocolate sitting perfectly on top.
