SF Weekend Planner: Free Bourbon, Umami Burgers, Georgian Pop-Ups

Sure, Sunday is St. Patrick’s Day (and somewhat confusingly, the city-hosted parade is Saturday) but there’s more do this weekend aside from just drinking copious amounts of beer and eating green foods.

Free Bourbon Tasting at Brixton
Get a jump on your weekend drinking by availing yourself to the complimentary bourbon tasting session being held tonight at The Brixton. The event is being sponsored by 7×7 Magazine and will showcase four ultra-premium barrel-aged bourbons from the Small Batch Collection including Knob Creek, Basil Hayden’s, Booker’s, and Baker’s. In addition to the sips, The Brixton’s director of mixology David Nepove will lead a demo on the proper way to mix a classic bourbon-based cocktail (Thursday, 6-8 PM, 2140 Union St; free bourbon tastings, discounted bourbon-cocktails will be sold separately, for more info, call 415: 409-1114).

Be The First to Try Umami Burger’s New All-Nighter in Palo Alto
If you live in the 650, you probably can fill the excitement mounting for the grand opening of Palo Alto’s new Umami Burger. The SoCal-based boutique burger chain opens to the public on Friday at noon and will feature the regular umami-laden choices along with some only in PA specials such as the Umami Caesar and the aforementioned All-Nighter, a Stanford-inspired beef patty topped with maple-glazed slab bacon, chest tot hash browns and coffee-infused red-eye gravy designed to provide fortitude to all those local procrastinating students (Opens Friday, 452 University Ave; Palo Alto; 650-321-8626).

Shop ‘til You Drop at San Francisco’s New Taste Marketplace

This homey artisan market that raised funds for the city’s Food Pantry will be back in action on Potrero Hill on Saturday afternoon showcasing over 35 local vendors, food trucks, Alamanac beer and Bluxome Street wines, cookbook signings, kid’s activities and live DJs (Saturday, free entry, donations welcome, 12- 5 PM; St. Gregory’s Episcopal Church, 500 De Haro St; 415-255-8100 or saintgregorys.org).
Head to Napa for the 20th Annual Taste of Yountville Celebration
The gorgeous weather and this two-day celebration are plenty enough reasons to tempt city slickers to head up to Napa Valley to savor Yountville’s finest food, wine and arts. Events will be taking place throughout Yountville all weekend long, but the affair culminates in a massive block party takes on Saturday afternoon from 12- 5 PM with individually sold sips and bites priced at $1 each (Friday and Saturday, see the complete schedule online or call the Yountville Chamber of Commerce at 707-944-0904).

Get Georgia On Your Mind (and in Your Belly) at a Satellite Republic Pop-Up Dinner
If you haven’t had a chance to nibble the traditional Georgian/Chechen eats from Boris Portnoy’s moped/trike pedaled food cart Satellite Republic, you have two opportunities this weekend. On Saturday and Sunday, Portnoy will be throwing a nine-course pop-up dinner at The Punchdown in Oakland (Saturday begins at 5 PM, $50 a person with wine sold separately; Sunday’s evening is being held outdoors, starting 5 PM $90 a person and includes wine and toastmaster lead wine clinking, to reserve for either event, go online, 2212 Broadway, Oakland)
