Our Austin: Rio's Brazilian Cafe

To celebrate our new Austin blog, we're highlighting the must-try spots for every Austinite (and visitor!) in the "Our Austin" series. Check for 'em every day to discover tried-and-true Austin locales that you may know well or may find for the first time!

The quaint house turned cute café features Brazilian delicacies like puffy cheese bread made from yucca root and savory pastries called salgadinhos that are reminiscent of empanadas. The vocabulary may be unfamiliar, but the flavors in dishes like the botafogo salad (garbanzo beans, artichoke hearts, apples and spinach in a red-wine vinaigrette) or the Moqueca de Frutas do Mar (a seafood stew with tilapia, shrimp and mussels in a coconut curry) are universal.

Enjoy the outdoor patio on Pleasant Valley now that the construction is finished, and be sure to eat your fill of the traditional yucca root, particularly good served like a French fry with cheese on top.

  1. I've been to Rio's many, many times since stumbling upon them in the summer of 12'. It's now my favorite Eastside hangout! Great food, friendly and attentive service, not to mention an extremely comfortable outdoor patio. Give 'em a try! - mike
