Opening Alert: 20 Spot Uncorks in the Mission This Weekend

20 Spot, a new wine bar and lounge set in a former indie record store in the Mission gets uncorked tonight. The wine’s definitely the thing here, which is curated by co-owner Bodhi Freedom (who also runs the Bacchus Wine & Sake Bar in Russian Hill) and showcases an extensive menu of international red and white wines by the bottle and 35 vinos by the glass, but the bar also stocks three local brews on tap. The 35-seat storefront channels a mid-century aesthetic - exposed brick, vintage Eames rocking chairs, 60s-era lights, leather sofas and a long bar made from reclaimed wood, while the music played from actual records and lit sign outside honors the space’s vinyl past.

As for food, chef Anthony Paone (formerly of the now-shuttered Sea Salt) tells us that he’s working out of a small, hoodless kitchen, which greatly limits what he can serve. To start, he'll be turning out a compact slate of locally sourced bar bites such as a cheese plate, a few raw or barely cooked fish items (oysters, chilled steamed mussels), a sandwich, a few seasonal salads and vegetable sides and one or two desserts. The team's ambitious plans of weekend brunch are definitely on hold for now.

20 Spot: 3565 20th St; 415-624-3140, open nightly (except Tuesday) from 5:30 PM-12 AM beginning tonight.
