Former Zed's Chef Arrested for Embezzlement

Now-closed Zed's, which was designed by local architect Michael Hsu
Gossipers, this one’s for you: The former head chef at now-shuttered Zed’s, Jacob Hilbert, and his wife, Lynda Kay Hilbert, were arrested last night in Austin by the Lone Star Task Force for embezzling over $100,000 from Ends Meat LLC (Manna Restaurant) in Wilmington, North Carolina, as the Austin American-Statesman reports. The Hilberts were both proprietors in the restaurant company.

As the Scrumptious Chef blog reminds us, Zed’s had a reputation for serving less-than-desirable food in a well-designed atmosphere, and after it closed, Hilbert had moved on to work at celebrated restaurants like Tango du Chat in Wilmington and A La Mesa in Santa Fe, New Mexico, before disappearing.

Cocaine rings and mysterious deaths it’s not, but it’s still a contribution to the rumor mill.
