First Meal: Greg Vernick of Vernick Food and Drink

We’re asking top Philly food folk where they’d take a visitor for their first meal in Philadelphia. This week we hear from Greg Vernick, the former Jean-Georges Vongerichten chef who has made a splash in Philadelphia with Vernick Food and Drink. (In fact, several of our previous “first meal” responses have included stops at his Rittenhouse spot.)

Zagat: You have friend visiting who's never been to Philadelphia before. Where do you take them for their first meal in Philly, and what do you suggest they try there?

Greg Vernick: Important first note: we’d walk everywhere, no cabs. It’s easy in Philly and that’s how we’d maintain a healthy appetite. So, start with breakfast - coffee and crepes at Cafe L’Aube in Fairmount. Crepes sucre citron is my favorite.

For lunch, oysters and rabbit pie at The Dandelion. On to Zahav for dinner, where great choices are plentiful. Definitely the house-baked laffa bread and the hummus. And anything on a skewer. Finally, late night drinks and the tuna melt at American Sardine Bar. A good day.
