Classic Celeb Hideout El Encanto Re-Opens After Renovation

Since 1918, Santa Barbara’s romantic El Encanto has been a go-to getaway for the Hollywood set, from Clark Gable and Carol Lombard to Diane Lane and Sharon Stone. But, like all starlets, the hotel started to show her age. So Orient Express spearheaded a multimillion dollar facelift. Seven years later, the California-style bungalows have emerged with a thoroughly modern outlook to complement their historic architecture (think plantation shutters and hardwood floors with a serene muted palette and mod cons like iPod docs and flatscreen HD TVs). All bungalows have fireplaces and either a private patio or garden space, the perfect place for a paparazzi-free meal of farm fresh fare (with produce from the garden), homebrewed beer, cheeses (made from the milk of the hotel’s cow, Ellie) and coffee (roasted onsite).
