Checking In: The Ranch at Rock Creek, Montana

Welcome to "Checking In", our new weekly post in which we'll highlight some of the best, most interesting and out-of-the-way places to visit across the globe.

Looking to channel your inner cowboy? Montana’s all-inclusive Ranch at Rock Creek, a working cattle ranch comprised of over 6,600 acres, offers guests the chance to do just that. Spend your days here horseback riding across fields of wildflowers, hiking the nearby John Long Mountains or biking the forest trails. The Ranch also offers Western sports like clay shooting and archery, and even pistol shooing at the nearby Rod & Gun Club.

Choose from a range of accommodation options: go “glamping” in one of their creekside canvas tents, check into a room at the main Granite Lodge or opt for one of their twelve log cabins. Fly fishing fans should nab Trapper Cabin, which sits beside the river making it easy to wake up and cast your line early.

End your days with a locavore dinner at the lodge from Chef Josh Drage (think Montana-raised beef or lamb, paired with seasonal produce). Or opt for a meal under the Big Sky at alfresco eatery Blue Canteen which will offer casual, full-service dining beginning in May, from coffee and baked goods in the morning to a rack of ribs at night. When you’ve eaten your share, saunter over to the Silver Dollar Saloon for a nightcap and a round of pool.

ZAGAT TIP: After a long day of activity, head to the Granite Spa for a “Saddle Sore Soak & Massage”, where a 15-minute herb bath designed to soothe sore muscles is followed by a 90-minute massage.

79 Carriage House Lane, Philpsburg, MT 59858; 877-786-6027; Daily rates from $850 per person off-season and $995 during peak season
