Austin Weekend Planner: Chicken Coops and Grilled Cheese

An elaborate coop on the Funky Chicken Tour
This weekend is about keeping Austin weird (to use a cliché). From crawfish to grilled cheese to Easter, there's plenty going on over the next few days.

2Dine4 Crawfish Boil
Hosted at the idyllic Swift House, the boil benefits 2Dine4 Catering’s friend Lynn Smith with medical expenses. The garden party promises to be sweet, and to liven it up, bring your own booze. Also be sure to RSVP to supperfriends@2Dine4.com.

Swoop House, 3012 Gonzalez, 6 PM, $15 donation

Brewery/Comedy/Crawfish Tour
Join Ramin Nazer, 2012’s funniest person in Austin, for an all-day tour of local breweries like Hops and Grain and Live Oak Brewing. Then stick around for the crawfish boil and afterparty.

Meet at Festival Beach Park, 3000 Nash Hernandez Senior Rd., 11:30 AM, afterparty at same location at 4 PM, $68, 512- 825-7725

Funky Chicken Coop Tour

If you’ve ever wanted to house your own chickens, now is the time to learn. The tour starts at Buck Moore Feed & Supply bright and early, with classes like “Getting Started With Chickens” at 8:30. Or if you just feel like watching the little cluckers cluck around, the self-guided tour around town with 15 elaborate coops is for you. There’s also a Tour de Funky Chickens Cycling ride option.

Starts at Buck Moore Feed & Supply, 5237 N. Lamar Blvd., $9.24 for the tour map, 10 AM - 4 PM

Austin Grilled Cheese Invitational
The grilled cheese trend may not have infiltrated our city yet as we’d hoped, but you can get a taste of it on Saturday at the competition hosted at the quirky sometimes-music-venue Moose Lodge in East Austin. The Austin event is a spin-off of the Los Angeles invitational and is sponsored by the usual suspects like Antonelli’s Cheese Shop.

Moose Lodge #1735, 2103 E.M. Franklin Ave.; $5, Doors open 1 PM, grilling begins 2:10 PM

Easter Brunches Around Town
Check out our list of special Easter brunches at restaurants around town. Whether that’s the famous fried chicken at Olivia or a family-style meal at Olive and June, we’ve got you covered.
